Reminiscences

The Importance of Eyes
ShriMaharaj used to say, "A virtuous person can be identified from his eyes. Even when the gaze of someone who is ever aware of God, lies upon objects, his attention is not actually directed thither. The gaze of one who is a Siddha is dispassionate, like a child's. The gaze of one who is a Mumukshoo displays painful longing. The evil desires that overpower a person usually gain access through the eyes. The setup of a person's mind is known from his eyes. Of a person, we sometimes say he 'has an evil eye.' At the time of death, the eyes are the first to become fixed, losing all reflexes. As soon as the body becomes lifeless the eyelids cease to move. If eyes are used for looking at God, love for Him will arise sooner. So, one should be on guard when making use of one's eyes. If the eyes are affected, the soles of feet are massaged with oil; oil is dropped in the ears, thereby eyes are relieved. So, to improve one's gaze, one should practice namasmarana and practice listening to it. This will help to steady the mind and make one's gaze wholesome."
